 “外国小哥”帮助世界了解中国 外籍记者聂子瑞(Erik Nilsson)在过去的十几年中,跟随《中国日报》走访了中国大陆的每个省份,采访内容不仅包括中国在扶贫、救灾、环境保护等方面的发展,还包括中国经济、社会和文化领域的发展,以帮助世界更好地了解真实的中国。

 Erik Nilsson is an American journalist who works at China Daily and is a recipient of the Chinese Government Friendship Award. Nilsson first came to China in 2005 for an internship program in China Daily when he was studying journalism at Central Michigan University. A year later, Nilsson returned to Beijing and joined the newspaper. “I love the food, the culture, the history, and above all, the people. I returned to work in China, and I never left,” he said. Nilsson’s biggest contribution to China is his devotion to telling its stories. Working for China Daily enables Nilsson to share stories from all over China with Chinese and global audiences alike. Casquinho came to America for various reasons, from wanting to learn more about American culture to sharing more about her own. “Watching American movies made me come here to experience high school life in America and also share my culture with others. I’ve been enjoying it really,” Casquinho said. As expected for most people, adjusting to a new country was hard for Casquinho. However, with the help of her friends, Casquinho was able to make adjustments and positively look forward to living in America. Upon staying in America, Casquinho noticed some differences between America and Germany. “Americans are open, friendly and superficial. They’re open to new cultures. Also, there are different kinds of food and music here. The diversity is pretty great.” Along with the differences in culture, Casquinho also listed some differences in the school systems, sharing how some concepts that American schools have aren’t found in German schools. “We don’t have classes with different people from different grades. We

 don’t have SATs or Sols; we just have final exams. Its very different. We start later and finish earlier. We don’t have school sports teams, so there’s not a lot of school spirit. We don’t have the concept of high school; we just have 5th through 12th grade all in one school.” Differences aside, Casquinho is enjoying the American high school experiences with the schools endless efforts of getting students involved in sports and clubs in school. As part of her American high school experience, Casquinho has joined some clubs and taken part in activities around the school and hopes to join more. Casquinho enjoys her experiences in America so far, with some of her favorite experiences being her time at school and some sports games she’s attended.  There were some moments when I was a bit homesick during my semester in China. Fortunately, Shanghai was a big city. I could find a little bit of “home” there. For instance, I visited Mexican restaurants where I met Mexican people. Over time, I got to know the Mexican community there more. It was so much fun!

 The exchange experience made me more adventurous and more outgoing with new people. It helped me see things from a completely different perspective and be more grateful for little things in life. I also see my own culture differently now. I’ve become more open-minded and understandable towards things.
